Thirty Days of Thankful

Hi Lovelies!

So much to catch you up on! I’m working on some blog posts about my trip to New York :) I did so much and learned so much it’s taking longer than expected.

But this month I decided to challenge myself. Thirty Days of Thankful! Often I’m so busy that I forget to be thankful for the little things in life. Today as I was hurriedly eating my sandwich on the way to the bank on my lunch break…a memory from my childhood surfaced. It’s one I don’t like to think about, but had a huge impact on me.

When I was about 6 years old, we came to visit my grandparents for two weeks. We lived in Oregon at the time so spending time with them was rare as they lived all the way across the USA in South Carolina. While we were there, my dad’s niece invited me to come spend the night with her daughters. We were born three days apart and we trouble with a capital T whenever we were together. I had never been allowed to go to their house before. We had always spent the night at their grandma’s house as their mom was usually working. So to spend the night at their house was a treat!

I’ll never forget that night though. When we pulled into their yard I remember thinking where is the swing set? Why aren’t there any toys? I had brought my teddy bear (I seldom left home without him, he even has his own Delta wings!) and I couldn’t help but hug him tighter. Their house was nothing like mine. No tv, hardly any toys and it was dirty. We played outside for a few hours and then she tucked us into bed.

We woke up the next morning long before their mom. I was hungry..I’m like a starving baby bear at breakfast (still am!). We traipsed into the kitchen and my heart plummeted. They offered me the last of their orange juice which along with a spoiled gallon of milk was the ONLY thing in their fridge. Quite a shock for a kid whose fridge was never empty… I asked for some water and when they opened to cabinets to find some thing to eat..there wasn’t anything. I played it off and said I wasn’t really hungry. I remember praying that my dad would come soon. Thankfully, my dad showed up about thirty minutes later. What did he do? Loaded all of us up in the car, took us down the road and fed us breakfast. After breakfast, we spent the day fishing before taking them to their grandma’s house. I didn’t say much all day or anything on the ride home. I remember getting back to my grandma’s house, climbing onto my mom’s lap and bursting into tears. It hurt my heart to know I had so much and others had so little.

As I ate my sandwich today, I thought long and hard about that memory. How many kids will go hungry this holiday season? How many kids go hungry in my community every year? How many lunches do I eat out paying more than anyone should for a chicken sandwich? My appetite lost, I placed my remaining half of a turkey sandwich in my lunchbox and pulled into the grocery store parking lot. I grabbed two canvas bags out of my truck and headed into the store. I loaded them up with all kinds of canned goodies. Yams, soups, peas, corn, green beans, stuffing, cranberry sauce..anything I could think of that a family might need for a Thanksgiving meal.

On day 6, I’m thankful for parents who did without so that we wouldn’t go hungry. For food on the table (yes, even those nasty brussel sprouts), and the opportunity to feed some kids in my community. Tonight, I’ll drop the food off on my way home and know that somewhere..someone will be able to eat :)

64% of the kids in the 20 counties that surround me will go hungry this week.

So I ask this of you! Next week, instead of eating out one day, donate that $6-$10 to a local soup kitchen or take those canned goods you really aren’t going to eat to a donation drop off.

Love,

One Humble Lemon

If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that?

James 2:16

Thankful Thursday!

Is it Thursday already? I feel like this week is flying and crawling by all at the same time..but’s here’s what I’m thankful for this week!

1 – Bargain Brooks

I’ve been wanting to try a pair of Brooks out..but not at the $125 price tag. This week I found a pair this week at a Rugged Warehouse store for $44 and decided to try them out. SOOOOO COMFY! I’m running in them today for the first time :) I’ll let ya know how it goes.

2 – Mr. Peacock has arrived..and he’s wild!

Our last peacock was eaten by an owl..it’s a crazy story..a grown peacock getting picked up and hauled off by an owl? I wouldn’t even believe it if I hadn’t seen it with my own eyes. But needless to say..the farm finally has a new peacock stud..and he thinks he’s hot stuff. He’s very wild and smart.

3 – New House

My new house-to-be is coming right along! I should be closing on it the last week of the month. I’ve been scouring the internet for remodeling ideas. It’s an older house that needs some TLC and the living room/dining room has an interesting layout. Last night I found exactly what I had been thinking in picture form :) Exciting!

4 – DIY Projects

I’ve been trying to do one new DIY project each week. This week I’m tackling scrap fabric rugs. So easy..all you need is a stack of old t-shirts and a hula hoop. They work up really quickly! I’m thrilled to be using so much of my scrap fabric.

5 – Church!

I’ve been struggling a lot lately with where I am supposed to be plugged in at church. There were several issues at the church I was attending that I did not feel comfortable with. After praying and seeking God, I knew it was time to start looking for a church home. I visited several churches but one just seemed to fit. I’ve been attending there now for about 2 months and I can’t begin to tell you how much I love it. I literally count down until I get to go to church. It’s been a long time since I’ve been this excited about worshiping. They have a huge college and career ministry and I LOVE IT! I’m no longer the awkward single, childless, never married girl in my Sunday school class. There are 15 other girls all walking the same path as me and THEY ROCK! We have monthly Bible study and I wish we had it every week! I love sitting cross legged in Rebecca’s living room digging into the word.

6 – Halfway There!

I’m really thankful that God made people to endure med school! RJ is halfway through with block :) I’m thankful that he’s got 7 tests under his belt this week and only 7 more weeks to go! (Not that I’m counting or anything..) This girl is ready for him to have some free time! Because secretly I really just want to go eat Chocolate Chip Cookie Ice cream with him :)

What about you? What are you Thankful for this Thursday?

Thankful Thursday!

It’s Thankful Thursday! What are you thankful for this week? I’m thankful for…

Purple Pants :)

I love capri pants! Purple capri pants are even better!

Flowers!

I love flowers! Nothing makes me happier than a daisy. Sorry roses..you’re overrated in my book.

Summer weather! It’s been in the 80’s around here :)

SO ready to break out the swimsuit!

Rescued Frogs

Spring means the return of my favorite little guys..frogs! I’ve rescued 3 this week from the perilous hallway in my building.

Gelato

I have recently discovered Gelato..and I’m in serious looooooooove. It’s Kosher, Vegetarian, HFCS free and hormone free..how much better than that can it get? Better ingredients make

Special Boys :)

It’s not often that I am impressed with a guy. But last weekend I had to work/photograph an all day event and Guy #3 aka CB tagged along. I really enjoyed hanging out with him all day. He made the day fly by. They were having a sidewalk chalk competition at the festival and he suggested we do it! (Be still my beating heart..I was going to do it..I’ve done it the last 5 years in a row and won 2x as runner up.) I’ve never had a guy that liked to do stuff like that or at least pretended too lol. He decided we should each do one and let it be a “competition” (he might have forgotten who he was up against..). It was so fun. We listened to some good old beach music and settled in to doodle out our squares. I went with a lotus flower and lily pad while CB opted to represent his fraternity, Kappa Alpha Order.

He was even nice enough to not get his red sidewalk chalk on me. I can’t say the same for the three other sorority girls who passed by..they might have gotten secretly tagged when he hugged them..lol :)

We spent the rest of the day enjoying the festival, eating lunch and attempting to put ice down each others shirts (he started it..) as it was about 90* outside.

I’m thankful for moments that make me smile :)

XOXO!

Thankful Thursday!

Hello Darlings!

It’s Thursday! Can you believe it? It seems like this year is flying by me! It’s my birthday week and there is so much to be thankful for this week :) I’m thankful for moments..they should not be taken lightly.

1 • Firefighters

Yesterday, Boston Fire Department lost two brothers in the line of duty, Lt. Edward Walsh, 43, and Firefighter Michael Kennedy, 33. Firefighters who battled a 9 alarm fire. 3 children came home to the horrible news that their father would never be coming home. Two families’ lives forever changed by one moment. My heart breaks for the families of these two brave men. They gave their lives to save others. I am thankful for the brothers and sisters who suit up everyday to keep us safe. I am thankful for the 30 firefighters who endured injury yesterday to save people from one of the most vicious fires seen in the last 30 years. I am thankful for the ambulances who respond, for the policeman who protect and for the soldiers who defend us each and every day. You are not forgotten. Rest easy brothers.

2 • New Hats

I’ve got two new hats to sport this year :) I’ve always wanted a floppy hat and I finally found some that fit my head (And don’t make me look dorky!). I took them to one of my favorite shops to get monogrammed. EJ’s mom runs a local embroidery shop and Mrs. Penny always does us right :) Her prices can’t be beat, the craftsmanship is spot on and she’s just wonderful to talk with.

3 • New Recipes

I discovered the perfect blend of sweet, salty and crunchy this week. Pretzel Chocolate Chip Cookie bars..they are off the charts..off the chain..outta this planet delicious! So good that I have to make another batch for Saturday because my roommates have eaten all but 2 squares.

4 • New Corn Hole Set

I finally bought my own corn hole set :) For those of you who might not live as far south as I do..I first discovered this game when I lived in Somerset, KY. It seems to be catching up out here in South Carolina. My friend, Karen, makes them by hand so I asked her to craft me a set. She left the chevron painting and decorating to me. I’ve got a bit farther to go for them to be ready for the Carolina Cup this weekend :) I ordered custom corn hole bags from lots2ofr on eBay. He has a great store and his bags are ACA regulation. The craftsmanship was perfect. I’ve made them myself before and a perfect bag is quite the undertaking.

5 • New Family!

We have a new family member :) Well technically she’s been around our family for about 3 1/2 years now, but we get to officially keep her FOREVER now :) I’ll never forget the first time she waltzed into family lunch at Gram’s. You aren’t “officially dating” in our family until you’ve brought your significant other to Sunday lunch. She was a whirlwind..and it took me a bit to warm up to this Southern Belle. Whew..she was like lightning striking. (We called her white lightning for the 1st year they dated!) But over the years, I saw one thing that made her more endearing to me than anything she could have said or done…the amount of love I saw that girl pour into my cousin and our family. She is a fountain of beauty both inside and out. She lights up the room when she enters and you’re always sad to see her leave. She may be bold and forthright when it comes to telling you what she thinks..but I wouldn’t change her for the world :) I was super excited to watch my cousin marry the love of his life this weekend. She has definitely blessed our family over the past 3 years and I am excited to watch their love story grow even more! Love you bunches Red!

6 • New Weather :)

We’ve finally gotten a break from Winter! It was like 2 days of 80* weather..but hey..I’ll take it :) Winter has been especially wicked this year!

What are you thankful for this Thursday?

XoXo,
